When the 25-year-old metal roof at Intonu Recycling in Warner Robins, Georgia, needed a long-term solution, a complete tear-off wasn’t the only option. American WeatherStar’s Met-A-Gard™ System restored more than 120,000 square feet of existing roofing, extending its service life while avoiding the cost and disruption of conventional replacement.
Research
The Intonu Recycling facility features approximately 122,800 square feet of 25-year-old R-panel metal roofing. After decades of exposure to the elements, the aging roof was ready for a long-term restoration solution.
Working with general contractor Maloof Weathertight Solutions, American WeatherStar Approved Contractor Olde South Contractors selected the Met-A-Gard™ Roof Restoration System. Designed for commercial metal roofs, Met-A-Gard™ combines detailed seam and fastener treatment with elastomeric acrylic coatings to create a seamless, durable, and watertight membrane.
Process
Before any repairs or coatings were applied, the existing metal roof substrate was thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt, debris, and other surface contaminants. Proper surface preparation is essential for promoting strong, consistent adhesion throughout the coating system.
Once the substrate was clean and properly prepared, Olde South Contractors addressed the roof’s critical details. Exposed fasteners and horizontal seams were sealed with Acrylic Butter-Grade 221, while Acrylic Brush-Grade 220 was applied to vertical seams. Existing repairs and other roof details were also incorporated into the restoration to create a uniform protective system across the roof.
The gutters received additional attention using urethane and silicone products to provide durable protection in these high-water-flow areas.
With the detail work complete, two coats of Acrylic 211 were applied across the roof, forming a seamless elastomeric membrane designed to provide long-term waterproofing protection while accommodating the natural expansion and contraction of the metal roof.
Result
The completed Met-A-Gard™ System restored the aging metal roof with a seamless, highly reflective, and watertight membrane designed to protect against weathering, UV exposure, rust, and corrosion. Intonu Recycling received a 10-year American WeatherStar Roof Coatings Labor & Material Warranty for long-term protection.
