In this case study, we discuss restoring an aged and weathered retail chains roof (asphalt, to be specific) using the Ure-A-Sil Roof Restoration System.
Research
A significant infrastructure enhancement was undertaken at a regional airport in Middletown, PA, where the main focus was restoring the primary terminal building’s roof, covering an extensive area of 14,000 square feet. The existing roofing system had reached a stage of noticeable wear, with efficiency and structural integrity being significant concerns. In pursuit of a solution that promised durability, weather resilience, and energy efficiency, the airport authorities thoroughly evaluated various options. Their decision to employ the American WeatherStar Ure-A-Sil restoration system was influenced by its compatibility with the existing roof, effectiveness in enhancing thermal performance, and cost efficiency. This choice aligned with the airport’s operational requirements and fit within the budgetary framework, positioning the Ure-A-Sil system as an optimal solution for the airport’s roofing needs.
Process
The roof restoration began with an extensive evaluation, identifying areas with weathering and penetrations needing repair. The first critical step was cleaning the roof surface using EcoCleaner 925, which effectively removed all dirt, debris, and old coatings. This thorough cleaning ensured that the roof was in the ideal condition for the subsequent restoration steps.
Sealing the roof penetrations was the next priority. This was expertly handled using Aromatic Urethane 520, a sealant chosen for its strong adhesive properties and its ability to bridge gaps for effective waterproofing. The application of this base coat was instrumental in enhancing the roof’s overall integrity.
The process continued with the application of an intermediate coat of Silicone 410. This layer served as a robust barrier against environmental factors, further reinforcing the roof’s defense. The restoration culminated with a top coat of Silicone 410 mixed with Roofing Granules, which provided the dual benefits of enhanced durability and protection against UV rays. The addition of Roofing Granules also improved the roof’s reflectivity and resistance to ponding water. The comprehensive approach resulted in a seamless, flexible membrane, significantly improving the roof’s resilience and longevity.
Once the problem areas and flashing details were addressed, a base coat of Aromatic Urethane 520 was applied.
Finally, the American WeatherStar Approved Contractor applied a top coat of Silicone 410 and Roofing Granules to complete the project.
Result
Once completed, the project was inspected by an independent third-party roof consultant. The new roof restoration qualified for a 15-year material warranty, ensuring the material provided will last through the term of the warranty and warranting that a properly applied American WeatherStar product will not fail as the result of normal weathering or manufacturing defects.
